Eat a bowl of lentils and most of it follows the route you’d expect. But a meaningful fraction — the fiber — passes through the small intestine essentially untouched, because human enzymes can’t break it down. It arrives in the colon intact, and that’s where the interesting handoff happens.

Resident bacteria ferment that fiber. The main byproducts are three short-chain fatty acids: acetate, propionate and butyrate. “Short-chain” just describes their size. Their importance is out of all proportion to it.

Butyrate, the local currency

Butyrate is the standout. The cells lining your colon prefer it as fuel — they burn it directly rather than relying on glucose from the bloodstream. A well-fed microbial community therefore helps keep the gut lining itself well-fed, supporting the barrier between the contents of your gut and the rest of you.

You don’t digest fiber. The microbes do — and they pay you back in molecules your own cells can run on.

Acetate and propionate are absorbed and travel further afield, where researchers have linked them to signals involved in appetite, metabolism and immune regulation. The word to hold onto is signaling: these aren’t just calories, they’re messages.

Why this is more than trivia

The short-chain-fatty-acid story is the clearest worked example of a deeper point: the bacteria aren’t passive passengers. They run a chemical economy whose outputs interact with human biology in specific, increasingly measurable ways. It’s also why “feed your microbes” — a varied diet with plenty of different plant fibers — is sounder, more boring advice than any single supplement.
